About Vacation Rentals in South Shore

Nova Scotia's South Shore is traced by quiet roads that allow cyclists to wind through a coastal paradise. It is the Atlantic coast running southwest from Halifax Harbour to the western end of the peninsula at Yarmouth. For guests of Canada Vacation Rentals, the secluded anchorages, fishing villages, boat builders, artists’ hamlets, antique shops, and beautiful white sand beaches all conspire to make this a relaxing active experience.

The South Shore is an important area for tourism in the province, with it being home to many cottages, hotels, and tourist attractions. The provincial scenic travel way, the "Lighthouse Route" runs on Highway 3 through most centres along the South Shore. The tourism industry in the South Shore is concentrated in the towns of Lunenburg, Chester, Mahone Bay, Liverpool and the fishing community of Peggys Cove.

The South Shore was one of the first areas of North America to be colonized by Europeans following the French settlement at Port-Royal in 1605. During the 20th century, the South Shore became the center of Nova Scotia's fishing industry, as fishers in small boats operated from numerous tiny villages dotted along the coast. One of the main attractions in the region is the Peggy's Cove lighthouse that has been guiding fishing boats home since the 1860s.

The small village of Chester is popular for all the sailing that is a big part of the village's legacy. Amble over to the Lordly House Museum,  built in 1806, for a glimpse into Chester life. The home is an excellent example of Georgian architecture. The largest community in the South Shore region is the town of Bridgewater, which is the commercial and industrial center, although it is not a major tourism draw. Yarmouth and Shelburne are the other large towns. Head inland about 30 miles from Liverpool to Kejimkujik National Park for outdoor fun.
